Tipping in Sri Lanka: The Rupee Cheat Sheet (2026)

Sri Lanka has no aggressive tipping culture — but service workers live on small kindnesses, and the right gesture in the right note removes all the awkwardness. Here are the amounts, in rupees, that locals and returning travellers actually give.

The money before the maths

Keep 500- and 100-rupee notes loose — those are tip-sized; 2,000s are not, and small cafés cannot change them. Card tips do not work in Sri Lanka: cash in hand, at the moment of thanks, with a "thank you" in Sinhala (istuti) or Tamil (nandri) seals it.

Transfers and drivers — the honest range

Our prices already include taxes, tolls and the chauffeur's time, and tipping is never expected — it is a thank-you, not a toll. The comfortable standard: 500 LKR for a smooth city transfer, 1,000 when they waited through a late immigration queue or hauled six bags, and 1,500–3,000/day for a multi-day hire. Long hill-country drives (CMB → Ella runs six hours) earn the upper end if the drive was calm and the tea-shop stop was handled.

Restaurants, hotels, tuk-tuks

• Restaurants: check the bill for "Service Charge 10%" — if present, just round up; if not, 5–10%. Street-food and tea-jar counters: no tip, thanks is plenty.
• Hotels: porters live on this — 200–300 per bag. Housekeeping: 300–500 daily (leave it visibly on the desk, not sealed, because they clean in shifts).
• Tuk-tuks: agreed fare is the fare; 100–200 extra only when the driver talks you out of a rip-off or drives like a saint in Colombo traffic.
• Boat men, fish-feeders, elephant-orphans wardens: 200–500 for a handled moment; never for a "mandatory" photo — that is a sales tactic.

Where NOT to tip

No tipping at temples beyond the donation box, none to children, none to officials — that is a bribe, and you are asking them to risk their job. If a cop waves you aside at a roundabout, the currency that works is politeness, not rupees. And in a shop, a 500 note on a 400 bill is a "keep the change" flex that locals find hilarious; do it right and you will get a better story for it.
