It is also slow (hill curves + friendly stops), often standing-room-only, and its station clocks run on island time. Perfect as the activity of a day. Catastrophic as the way to catch a 6 p.m. flight.

The section that matters

Locals will tell you: skip the Kandy → Nanu Oya stretch and take that by road (2.5 hours through tea and mist, comfortable, with stops), then ride Nanu Oya → Ella (~2.5 h) for the greatest hits — Horton-Plain views, the tea-wall approach to Haputale, Demodara's loop tunnel, and the Nine Arch just before Ella. That way the train time is pure scenery and the road time is comfort with luggage.

Getting the ticket, honestly

• Reserved 1st/2nd class: at the station reservation counter, typically 1–3 days ahead (some trains from Kandy open earlier windows). Cash, passport number, your station's queue. In peak months the good departures sell out — your hotel can stand in line for you.
• Unreserved: any 2nd/3rd class, day of. On Nanu Oya → Ella at 10 a.m. in December, expect standing. Bring water, a small bag and a sense of humour; the crew works the windows.
• "Private tour" agent tickets: bundled with markup — fine if it removes the queue, but know what you are paying for.

Doing the road instead (or as well)

A chauffeured drive is the other way: airport → Nuwara Eliya arrives warm with all the bags, Nuwara Eliya → Ella can stop at every viewpoint the train blurs past, and the drive is exactly the roads our team runs daily — the hairpins ask less of passengers than ten hours of sitting still.
